While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

Matthew 28:11-15

Devotional

When I first looked at this part of the chapter, I dismissed its relevance and connection to our lives. It seemed that a few liars and a cover-up story didn’t apply. Yet, I kept returning to the passage and realized that it applies in a big way. When you understand why they did this, you will see we do the same things and have similar patterns. What they were doing was trying to maintain their control and power. They didn’t want the story to be true because it would require them to change. Jesus calls us to change and to become more like Him. Following Him requires us to give up control of our lives and the power we think we have. We must drop our metaphorical nets and follow Him wherever He leads us.

For Reflection

Where do you seek control in your life? Is it with your family, your children, your grandchildren, etc.? Is it with your job and finances?

What are the parts of your life that you would control rather than allow God’s hand to have control over?

Prayer

Lord, the temptation to run our lives in the ways we desire is strong. The temptation to give into our weak flesh is powerful. Please help us to live as a people who relinquish and let go of our control. Help us to surrender to your ways and desires for us. Lead us on the path you have chosen for us, seeking first your Kingdom and righteousness. Amen.
