Daily Devotionals

august 18, 2021

Our Peachtree Church email devotionals this week, August 16-20, will be written by Peachtree’s Student Ministry staff.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 6:6

Do you want to hear from God? My guess is that most people would answer “Yes” to that question.

There are three occasions in my life when I am certain I have heard the Lord speak to me. And in His humor, they've all been while I was in the car because I often turn on music when I am driving.  Once when I was in college, my dad was with me in the car and asked why I was not comfortable with silence and simply being alone with my thoughts.  Lacking an immediate response, I thought about his question later and actually began turning off the music every once in a while.  Now on long car rides or sometimes even on my drive to work, I often drive in silence and pray.  And I can say with confidence that the Lord has spoken to me in that silence.

As we pray and desire to hear from the Lord, I encourage you to "turn off the music."  Scripture tells us in Matthew 6:6 that we are to retreat and withdraw to spend time in solitude with the Lord.   As we turn off all distractions, we can patiently wait and listen.

Sometimes you have to do something different if you want to hear from God. Find a place where you can withdraw, pray, and truly listen for the Lord to speak to you.

For Reflection

Create a physical space where you can withdraw and spend time with the Lord in prayer and in His word.

Do you patiently wait and listen in silence as a part of your prayer?

Since the word of God is alive and active, how can you pray the words of scripture and let them become your prayer?

Prayer

Father, Quiet the noise around me as I come to you in prayer today.  Thank you for constantly pursuing me and reaching out to me.  I pray that I would continue to grow in my wisdom and understanding of who You are and what You are capable of doing.  Lord, please speak to me now and throughout my day so that I can know Your will for my life.  In my desire to hear from You, help me slow down and be attuned to Your presence.  I pray all of this in Your holy name, Amen.
