For five wonderful Wednesday nights this summer, Children’s and Family Ministry was able to gather together to Worship, Eat and Play! Our theme was Treasured! We wanted everyone who came to know that they are a treasure to God. Throughout our time together kids and families learned that God knows them, God hears them, God comforts them, God forgives them, and that God calls them.
Each day this week, someone from the Children’s and Family Ministry staff will share a little more about what the kids and families learned.
A recent survey found that more kids aspire to be a YouTube star than an astronaut, doctor, or teacher. It’s no surprise that today’s kids crave fame and recognition. They desperately desire to be known. Feelings of insignificance and invisibility can strike any of us. We each need to hear and believe that our God knows us. He knows everything about us. We are his treasure.
During each of my labor experiences – four of them – my sweet husband would kiss me on my forehead when the pain was extreme. When I would comment on my labor and say, “It hurts,” he would respond with, “I know, honey. I know.” Unfortunately, my response to him was far from sweet. I would always respond to his sweetness with a very frustrated, “No, you don’t know! You really don’t know!” He wanted to know and understand, and I know that if it had been possible, he would have taken the pain on himself for me in that moment. Thankfully, we have a God who knows, understands and cares for us through all of our joys and sorrows. It’s now a funny story and an embarrassing reminder that Trey really is the sweet one in the family.
Every time I read Psalm 139, I think that even in my deepest physical pain, the one who loves me the most here on earth couldn’t fully know my experience. It is only my Lord who knows me at the most intimate level.
