Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people will go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.”
Exodus 16:4
And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.
Mark 6:7-9
Manna is the bread-like substance God gave the Israelites to eat in the desert after they escaped slavery in Egypt. Our manna is the food we are given every day. Part of Jesus’s prayer instructs us to trust God with our daily provision of food: “Give us this day our daily bread. . .” I pray for God to give me JUST what I need for today. Yesterday is done, and tomorrow isn’t here yet. All I need is today’s supply—of more than just food.
What other provisions does God offer every day?
I look for those daily provisions. I seek them, and I rejoice as they appear! Not only does God provide material sustenance, He provides our life-calling. And because today’s call might look very different from tomorrow’s call, we hit the restart button and ask Him daily to show us what He is giving us and where He wants us to serve. Then we THANK Him for every morsel that fills us, every hatched idea, all the energy we find to work in His kingdom: “Joining Christ daily in the restoration of all things.”
And so, fed and equipped, we shall join Him.
For Reflection
What has God given me today to sustain me on my journey?
How has God equipped me today to serve in His kingdom?
Prayer
“The sure provision of my God attends me all my days.
O may Thy house be mine abode, and all my work be praise.
There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come,
No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.”
(From “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” by Isaac Watts)
Gracious Lord, make me Your child, in Your house, always dependent on You. Amen.
