We have all heard the expression “what a waste.” It’s usually used to describe someone squandering a great opportunity. We might be tempted to say that about these days when we are missing out on life, at least the life that we had planned. It’s frustrating, and I will admit to feeling a little stir crazy. Even if we are still very busy and productive, it’s not at all as we imagined a few short weeks ago. It’s very disruptive. However, disruption is not really a waste of time. It is a crucial time, a unique opportunity for spiritual growth. It is an invitation to a deeper walk with Christ.
This period of disruption is an invitation to prayer, scripture reading, compassion toward others, and being present with those that we love. It’s an invitation to the things we normally say that we are too busy to do. James writes that times of trial and testing require perseverance. This pandemic is teaching us that there is much that is beyond our control, especially how long this will last. No matter the timing, we should let it finish its work, or as the New Revised Standard Version says, “Let endurance have its full effect.” That full effect is that we may be mature and complete. Disruption in our lives is difficult and sometimes even tragic. However, it is not without purpose and should not be squandered. It’s a time to become more like Christ. So don’t waste it.
