He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Mark 5:43

This little verse comes at the end of a long, interesting, and interrupted story that actually runs from Mark 5:21 to the end of the chapter in verse 43. To summarize, a Jewish leader comes to Jesus pleading for the Lord to intervene in the life of his gravely ill daughter. As Jesus goes with the man to tend to the daughter, a crowd follows, including a woman who has been ill for twelve years and has exhausted all her resources and options. She believes that if she can just touch His robe, she will be healed. When she is able to reach out and brush the hem of His cloak with her fingers, she is immediately healed.

As Jesus speaks with the woman, people appear and tell the Jewish leader not to waste Jesus’ time because the girl has already died. Jesus replies, telling the man simply to believe. Together they go to his home, and Jesus restores the girl to life and health.

Then Jesus tells them to give her a chili cheese dog and onion rings from the Varsity along with an F.O. (Okay, I added the details in there. I confess.) Yet the interesting thing to me is that Jesus is being incredibly practical here.

God is interested in—and concerned about—every detail of your life. Too many Christians think that all God wants is their souls. He does, but He also wants your heart, your mind, your strength, and even your tummy. The Lord is invested in ALL of your life—the practical dimensions as well as what many think are the esoteric and impractical (spiritual?) dimensions of your life.

For Reflection

Have I given all of my life to Jesus or simply my soul?

How do I need to open other areas of my life to the leadership of Jesus?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for caring about all of me. As I seek to follow You, help me give You access to every area of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
