I know I’m getting a bit ahead of things here, but “White Christmas” is one of my favorite Christmas movies. A scene I particularly enjoy is when Bing Crosby bumps into Rosemary Clooney in the dining room late one night. Neither can sleep, and they’re grazing for a snack. As they talk about what keeps them awake, Bing sings that classic song, “When I am worried, and cannot sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep, and I fall asleep, counting my blessings.”
I’m one of those folks who wakes up in the night. And when that happens, my wheels start to spinning. While I am rarely worried about something, I usually just start brooding over some project or person. Sometimes I’ll prompt myself with this old song and start to count my blessings. If I do that—WHEN I do that—I “fall asleep counting my blessings.”
Advent is a season of waiting in expectation. Perhaps we all can spend some time counting our blessings while we wait.
