What is Honour Academy?

Named for C.S. and Ida Honour — our church’s founders and champions of Christian education — Honour Academy features expert-led courses for people who want to grow in faith, connect more deeply with others, and become more like Jesus.

You’re Invited to Grow in Your Faith
and Become More Like Jesus

We invite you to …

see more of God’s work in your everyday life and relationships,

better express what you believe for yourself and those who want to know,

develop closer Christ-centered relationships in tight, focused gatherings, and

get equipped to become a more effective mentor, creator, leader, partner, parent, and friend.

What is Honour Academy like? [+]

We gather for a meal (first five weeks only).

We choose an area of study we think will make us better able to live the kind of life Jesus wants for us.

We get together with people who feel the same way we do.

Then, an expert facilitator leads us through a five- to ten-week deep dive on our chosen topic.

Courses will include table-based discussions and focus on practical application.

And, activities for kids and students as well!

Why is Honour Academy important? [+]

Those of us who want to grow in our faith don’t always know what steps to take. And though we attend church on Sunday, it can feel like a meaningful and compelling Christian life is just beyond our grasp.

That’s why we created Honour Academy. It features targeted topic-based courses designed for groups of people who want to grow in faith, connect more deeply with others, and become more like Jesus. Sessions are five to ten weeks long and meet on Sunday nights at our church. We offer expert-led classes on how to understand the Bible, strengthen your relationship with God, practice your faith in daily life, and better engage with the world.

What if Luke Were Lost?

Many of us have had the experience of making or being served a dish that had an ingredient missing. We still enjoyed whatever was served, but we knew that something was “off.” Without that little bit, we miss a lot.

Similarly, what if the Gospel of Luke were lost? What would we miss from the story of Jesus without this integral writing? This class will look at Luke in general, in comparison with the other Synoptic Gospels, and at the teachings, stories, and lessons that Luke includes which other Gospel writers do not.

The Prophetic Voice

Rev. Scott Tucker

Cost: $20/person

Many of us hear the words prophet and prophecy, and we immediately think of a vast foretelling of the future.  The major role of God’s prophets in the Old Testament was focused on a much closer understanding of the actions of the Israelites and the consequences of those actions, while prognostication of the distant future occurs in fewer places than most of us consider.  In this course, we will look at the role of the prophet in the Old Testament, as a leader of their people, as a guide towards the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God, while also examining where these prophetic voices still speaks to us today.

Who are God’s chosen people? Predestination, Election, and the people of God

Predestination is one of the most confusing and least understood concepts in the Bible. Typically, people either love it and can’t stop talking about it, or hate it, and ignore it. This class is for both types of people and everyone in between who want a better understanding of how to live into God’s unmerited favor towards us. In Paul’s Letter to the Romans, the Apostle spends a lot of time talking about the people God chooses, and why. In this 5-week class, we will learn what Paul is saying in Romans, what it means for Jews and Christians to both be considered chosen by God; from theologians including John Calvin and Karl Barth; the history and present implications of predestination and divine election; and how these doctrines can helpfully impact worship and our everyday lives. Come join us as we study these most-famous Presbyterian doctrines.

Theology in Harmony: The Centrality of Hymns as Expressions of Faith

What makes a hymn? Why does the church sing them?

Throughout its history, hymnody in the Presbyterian Church has remained deeply rooted in the principles of congregational singing and the expression of faith through music. Hymns continue to play this vital role in traditional and contemporary worship, fostering a sense of community, offering praise to God, and conveying theological truths to worshipers.

If you are a biblical expert and feel you have all things theological figured out, this is most likely not the correct forum for you.

Growing Together

Marriage is the most intimate of all human relationships, meant to be a source of blessing and joy in our lives. In fact, marriage is so important…so powerful…the Lord uses it as a metaphor to describe His relationship with US! But let’s be honest — falling in love is the easy part. STAYING in love takes effort. When couples say their vows, “for better or for worse, til death do us part,” most of them mean it. They truly do! They just haven’t lived it yet.

Join licensed therapist, Katie Gohde as she and her husband, Steve, lead you through a 5-week series designed to strengthen and renew your marriage. Whether you’ve been married for 6 months, or 60 years, this will help you understand yourself and your spouse in much deeper, more meaningful ways. Rooted in research but full of tools – this workshop is perfect for couples who feel happy and connected AND those who feel stuck and discouraged. Over the course of the class, you’ll explore personality blends, understand barriers to connection and learn tools to repair conflict effectively. You’ll feel renewed and ready to plan and dream and grow…together.

He spent 15 years in corporate America with companies ranging in size from Fortune 100 to small startups and a decade ago, he started his own firm. In his experience, if concepts in a book can’t survive the rhythm of real-life demands, they shouldn’t be put into practice. Having led many teams throughout his career, he loves seeing people reach their full potential. Katie and Steve live in Buckhead and have 2 children, Robbie and Maddie as well as 2 dogs, 2 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, and 2 of any other animal Katie and the kids can talk Steve into acquiring.
