Our Peachtree Church email devotionals this week, July 19-23, will be written by Peachtree’s Children’s and Family Ministry staff.

But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry and rich in unfailing love.

Nehemiah 9:7

Doesn’t it feel wonderful to be forgiven? As an avid worrier I know I am unable to rest until I have apologized and been reconciled with my loved ones. No matter what it is for which I am being forgiven, I always feel a huge weight lifted off of me. Forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts we can receive from our God. The whole reason Jesus came to Earth was to reconcile us to God by dying for our sins. He gives us the gift of eternal life with Him. We are all sinners who need God’s forgiving mercy.

God gives this forgiveness to us freely and without hesitation. Sometimes I need to remind myself of this when it comes to giving out my forgiveness to others. If I don’t have to earn God’s grace, why do I sometimes decide that others need to earn mine? Because I know the relief and joy that comes with being forgiven, I need to share that same joy with others.

What would our lives look like if we embodied Nehemiah 9:7 when we face arguments or hardships with others? We can act like our God of forgiveness. We can be gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love.

For Reflection

Have you forgiven yourself as God has?

Is there someone in your life you need to forgive today?

Prayer

Gracious God, thank You for being a God of forgiveness and mercy. We know we do not deserve Your forgiveness yet You give it away freely. Please help us do the same in our relationships day to day. Let us show the love and grace You show us, and help bring others closer to You. In Christ’s name, Amen.en.
