Daily Devotionals

June 29, 2020

Our Peachtree Church email devotionals this week, June 29–July 3, will all focus on “Old Testament Characters.”

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant warrior from Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds; he struck down two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. And he killed an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but Benaiah went against him with a staff, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear. Such were the things Benaiah son of Jehoiada did, and won a name beside the three warriors. He was renowned among the Thirty, but he did not attain to the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

2 Samuel 23:20–23

I’m waiting for the movie. We have movies about Navy SEALs, the Delta Force, Mission Impossible, James Bond, even Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen. I think it’s time to put out a movie about David’s Mighty Men. These characters offer enough material to give us a whole series of Old Testament hero movies.

Take Benaiah. This guy is an MMA champion, Tarzan, and Jack the Giant Killer all wrapped up in one. He is the kind of guy you want on your side in a dark alley because — in the name of God — he will not back down. In this day and age when too many followers of Jesus look the other way, Benaiah stands tall and strong and proud to the glory of God.

Benaiah’s story is just one in a small collection of stories about some of David’s faithful followers, men who helped David become the King and leader that he was.

Being inspired by them would not be a bad thing for us.

For Reflection

Who was your favorite hero when you were growing up?
What did you admire about that hero?

Who are your heroes of faith today?
What do you admire about them now?

If you are fighting battles today, who are the “mighty men” you surround yourself with so you do not fight alone?

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the people throughout history who have taken a stand for You and honored You with their service. I thank You for the heroes of my own faith and life, whose names I offer up now. Help me today to sense Your presence and strength and to serve You in all I do. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
