After some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Come, let us return and visit the believers in every city where proclaimed the word of the Lord and see how they are doing." Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. But Paul decided not to take with them one who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not accompanied them in the work. The disagreement became so sharp that they parted company; Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus. But Paul chose Silas and set out, the believers commending him to the grace of the Lord. He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Acts 15:36-41

I remain convinced that Barnabas is one of the most (or maybe THE most) underestimated characters in the New Testament, the first-century church, and maybe even the Kingdom of God. I don’t have time or space to go into the broader explanation of why I believe this, but suffice it to say that I wrote a master’s thesis on this theory.

Here’s the shortened version. Without Barnabas, Paul would not have had a validated ministry, we would not likely have three of the four gospels, and most of the letters in the New Testament would not exist. That’s how important Barnabas was and is.

And it all grows out of the meaning of his name, “Son of Encouragement.” (Acts 4:36-37)  Because Barnabas encouraged people, the message of Jesus spread and continues to spread today—not because of any rabbinical or seminary training but just because he encouraged others.

For Reflection

Who is someone who has encouraged you to grow in your spiritual life? Have you thanked that person?

Is there someone in your life whom God may be calling you to encourage today? Do it!

Prayer

God of everlasting encouragement, thank You for the people who have played the role of Barnabas in my life. Help me to seek the gift of encouragement from Your Spirit and use it today to help someone else. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
