Let your servants see what you’re best at—
the ways you rule and bless your children.
And let the loveliness of our Lord, our God, rest on us,
confirming the work that we do.
Oh, yes. Affirm the work that we do!
Psalm 90: 16-17 (from The Message)
My husband and I are avid Atlanta United soccer fans and love going to games at Mercedes Benz Stadium. We have seats close to the spot where players are subbed into the game when a tired teammate runs to the sidelines to rest and the new player high fives him as he runs onto the field. I have noticed that many players have little rituals or habits that they perform when they run onto the field. Some kiss the cross they wear around their necks or make the sign of the cross. Some point at the sky and put a hand over their heart. Some hop on one foot and do all these things at once! All of them are in some way acknowledging God as they begin their time to play. Now you could say, well, these are just superstitious gestures. But I’m choosing to believe the best. I think they are gestures that show the players know their time on the field is somehow holy, that the work they do is because of their God-given gifts. They give glory to God when they begin their work.
As we approach our work, we can groan that it is hard or stressful. We can be grouchy about our colleagues. We can be reluctant or negative as we enter the workplace or boot up the computer to work from home. Or we could be like those excited soccer players as they run onto the field to do their best, all for the glory of God.
For Reflection
What if you and I acknowledged every day that the work we do is holy work offered to the Lord?
What if we believed that God has gifted us in ways that make the work we do a blessing for others?
What if we give glory to God every day as we begin our work?
Prayer
Dear Lord, help me remember as I begin my work that You gifted me for it. Help me remember that You bless the work of my hands and heart and mind. Help me celebrate by offering what I do to You. Bless the work I do this day, Lord. Amen.
