All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

I find it fascinating how much we have changed in terms of our Bible-carrying habits. Far fewer people carry a Bible to church or to a Bible study anymore. At this same time, far more people have access to and read the Bible in those same settings. Most of the time when someone says, “Please open your Bible and turn to the passage,” I see phones come out, apps tapped, and eyes reading the passage before them.

It may not be on paper or in a book. It certainly is no longer written on a scroll or papyrus. It is not hand-copied, nor is it bound in leather with cords. But it is the Word of God. I am incredibly grateful that it is so readily available to all.

The format of God’s Word may have changed over time. But the power of God’s Word has not changed. Whether reading it in a printed book or on your phone, Paul reminds us in his letter to Timothy that “All Scripture is God-breathed.” God inspired the words that were then written by human hands. God breathed the thoughts and images into their minds, and they dutifully recorded them.

The passage also reminds us that God’s Word is “useful.” It teaches, rebukes, and corrects us, and it trains us in righteousness. We might not like being rebuked or corrected. Yet those acts are positive, just like teaching and training, if we understand that they make us more like Jesus and more like the people God created us to be. The passage also reminds us that because of God’s Word we are “thoroughly equipped.” What I need today for all of my decisions and choices, for every action, for all of my relationships, and for everything necessary to be rightly equipped, I can find within God’s inspired Word to me.

I praise God for this amazing gift. Why don’t you spend some time today praising Him for it as well?
