This season has taken the hurry out of my sails, and it feels like I am coming alive to the world anew. Recently as I was walking along my driveway, I looked down and picked up what appeared to be the combination of a leaf and flower. Upon closer study, I came to see the leaf and flower as a piece of art. The multiple colors, detailed brush strokes, and tassels were stunning. Later I found out that what I had discovered was a tulip poplar blossom. These blossoms had fallen literally all over my yard and my neighborhood, and yet I had never noticed them in the ten years I have lived here.
Honestly, it saddens me to think of all the ways and all the years I’ve missed seeing and experiencing the beauty God has put before me each day. Now, however, I’m growing in my noticing. My sense of smell has come alive to roses and honeysuckle. I’ve had amazing sightings of an owl and a hawk in my backyard, and my hearing is more attuned to the sounds of the birds, owls, and woodpeckers.
As I think about Peachtree’s mission of “Joining Christ daily in the restoration of all things,” I realize that I myself am a “thing” in need of restoration — as are you. May this season be a time of slowing down to notice the glory of God and the work of His hands. May it open your heart, restore your soul, and strengthen your faith.
