July 16, 2020

Our Peachtree Church email devotionals this week, July 13–17, will all be written by Peachtree’s Belong Ministry Staff.

But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:21–23

When I lived in the UK, one of my British friends frequently referred to the US as “the land of free refills.” He marveled at the fact that restaurant servers would simply continue to bring you more and more of whatever soft drink or lemonade you ordered. At a fast-food restaurant, you could even refill your own cup as many times as you wanted! It’s not that way in much of the rest of the world where you get a very small serving and then pay more if you want a refill.

Maybe we have grown so accustomed to being given something over and over again that we’ve become a bit jaded. Perhaps in our “land of free refills,” we’ve lost the excitement and joy of having something freely given because we’ve simply come to expect it. We take it for granted. It’s not bad if I take for granted a refill of my Coke Zero. But it would be a shame if I ever dismiss as boring or routine the fresh, new mercies God gives to me daily.

That faithfulness is exactly the promise of Lamentations 3. In the midst of crying out for God’s help and intervention during difficult and trying times, we read the great promise that God’s steadfast love never ceases and His mercies never come to an end. Then comes the stunning statement that “they are new every morning.” Wow! This promise is surely something to celebrate: fresh mercies, given to us again and again each day in an unlimited supply, a free refill without measure!

What an amazing God we have!

For Reflection

Have you ever taken God’s gifts for granted? Why?

What does it mean to you that God gives you fresh, new mercies every single morning?

How can you praise and thank God today for His free refill of grace and mercy?

Prayer

Thank You, God, that Your love never ceases. Thank You that Your mercies never come to an end. Thank You that Your love and grace are given to us fresh and new every morning. Help me to live in that promise today. Amen.
