I became a morning person out of necessity when I was in graduate school. I realized that in order to accomplish all I needed to, I had to rise early and tend to important matters lest they become crowded out during the day. One of the fringe benefits of this is that I am up before the dawn and get to see the sunrise.
My wife’s family has had a home on Lake Martin, AL, since the late 1950s, and it is our “go-to” place for rest and renewal. In the summer when I rise and let our dog out, I stand and watch the sun come up and have a few moments with the Lord. Fortunately for me we have an unencumbered view to the east.
While Jeremiah’s words in today’s text grew out of a conviction that God was with him despite great pain and struggle, I almost always say them when I watch the sun rise up over a smooth-as-glass lake. Whatever is going on in the world, or even in my own little life, I remember with the rising of the sun that God’s mercies never cease; they are new every morning.
