The final chapter of Matthew’s gospel takes the disciples back to the mountain, the place of great revelation and teaching. They are met with the Word and His authority. All authority has been given to Jesus. As I read those words, I can’t help but notice the word “author” within it. And when I hear the word “author,” I can’t help thinking of someone who knows what they’re talking about. An author has studied a subject and can speak intelligently and write about it. Jesus is the author of life. John’s gospel reminds us that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” All authority and power have been given to Him. And if it has, and if he is for us and not against, how much more can we trust in His promises and ways?
