September 25, 2023

In 2023, Peachtree Church is reading through the Gospel of Matthew and Paul’s Epistle to the Romans in conjunction with the sermon series New: Rediscovering the Story and Significance of Jesus. Devotionals are sent by email three days each week. Monday’s email includes additional background, history, and cultural information to help us better understand the texts. On Tuesday and Thursday you will receive a devotional based on one portion of the texts for this week.

Text for this week

Introduction to the Texts

The gospel’s transformative power leaps off the pages in the very first verse of Romans 8: there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Romans 8 proclaims the good news that what we deserve is not what we receive, because of what Christ has done for us and on our behalf. This chapter is a beacon of hope and provides believers a deep sense of comfort.

A book I was recently reading describes hope as something that is formed. But even more so, hope has transformative power, which is tasted and seen through the work of the Holy Spirit. Hope moves us from despair into a new mindset of peace. Paul even says that the Holy Spirit serves as a sign that one truly belongs to Him and is life and peace.

One of the continued promises of this chapter is that God adopts us as His sons and daughters. Because of our adoption in Christ, we are seen as brothers and sisters in Christ, essentially a family of God. Although these incredible truths fill this chapter, we are also reminded that suffering is inevitable on this side of heaven. It is simply part of our broken world. Despite our weaknesses, the Spirit intercedes on our behalf, knowing, as Paul says toward the end of this text, that if God is for us, who can be against us? We may go up against difficult moments and people; however, we serve a God who is with and for us.

The culmination of this chapter declares that each one of us is more than a conqueror through Him who loves us and that nothing in all of creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. What incredible words of comfort and power!

Devotional

There are incredible truths that permeate this chapter. These truths lie at the core of the Christian faith. They are foundational and should change the trajectory of our lives. They should point us directly into the arms and love of Christ because that is what He wants. He wants us, our hearts, and our lives. As a good father does, he provides all that we need and could ever imagine—an abundant life overflowing with His love.

For Reflection

Have you considered what a life lived by the power of the Holy Spirit looks like?

What truths from this text are the ones you need to hear most and why?

Prayer

Lord, it is my prayer that each of us would hold tight to the love you freely give us. Thank you for loving us in a way that binds us and allows us to be called children of God. Father, it is humbling to be reminded of your great love for us and what you’ve done for us. Thank you for sending us your son. Thank you for adopting us even when we have strayed. Thank you for finding us and wrapping us in your love. Amen.
