February 13, 2023

Peachtree Church is reading through both the Gospel of Matthew and Paul’s Epistle to the Romans in 2023 with New: Rediscovering the Story and Significance of Jesus.  Devotionals are sent by email three days each week. Monday’s email includes additional background, history, and cultural information to help us better understand the texts. On Tuesday and Thursday you will receive a devotional based on one portion of the texts for this week.

Text for this week

Introduction to the Texts

In chapter six, the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus continues His majestic teaching on topics with which folks were obviously wrestling 2000 years ago, and with which we continue to wrestle today.

Interestingly, in this portion of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus points out the profound differences between perception and reality. Apparently there were folks “back then” (as there are today) who could and would “talk the talk,” but did not “walk the walk.”

Jesus points out the difference that can be observed in someone’s life as He talks about people’s

  • Giving,
  • Prayer life (and He teaches the Lord’s Prayer),
  • Fasting (as a spiritual discipline, not a weight loss plan),
  • True values, and
  • Anxiety

When we remember that Jesus addressed much of His teaching to His disciples—while knowing there was a crowd there, looking on and listening in—we can understand how the Lord was teaching about a radical faith in God—not a surface matter, but deep, abiding trust in the Lord to care for us and guide us.

Devotional

Some may see it as hard, maybe even harsh, as Jesus points out the difference between true believers who tried to follow Him in their daily lives, and others (the religious establishment of His day?) who might have grown fatigued and weary or just too familiar with the sacred nature of being in relationship with the living God—to the point that they are phoning it in, “talking the talk but not walking the walk,” acting faithful when they really were not.

I recall many (MANY) years ago seeing an old episode of the TV show “Amos and Andy.” One of the characters was trying to sell residential real estate and showed a home—large, beautiful, seemingly spacious—to another character. He opened the front door and stepped into the back yard. It turned out that the glorious front of the home was merely a façade, and there was no depth to the house.

It LOOKED good, but perception turned out not to be reality.

Tragically, the world is filled with people who look—and often act!—like people of faith, but they have not lived the faith. It is only skin deep.

For Reflection

Who has been the person in your life who has shown you more than anyone else what following Jesus with integrity on a daily basis looks like?

What are the steps you need to take today to live out a faith life of integrity?

Prayer

Jesus, I long today to follow You in every aspect of my life. Help me not to be a spiritually shallow person, but to love You with all of my heart, mind, soul, and strength. Amen.
