He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Mark 5:41-43

Devotional

In Mark 5, we find that Jesus gives strict orders not to let anyone know of the miraculous healing of a little girl who had already been pronounced dead. Yet in another story in the same chapter, Jesus tells the man who was possessed by demons to go and tell the story of his healing. In two other passages in Matthew 8, we find other instructions from Jesus that no one is to tell of the cleansing of the leper or the healing of the blind man.

In seminary circles, this “keep-it-to-yourself” theme called the Messianic Secret. Jesus didn’t want the fullness of who He was or what He did to be completely revealed until the timing was right. He was concerned with the crowds growing too big, the Romans trying to kill him too soon, and a movement of people wanting to make him a military King. He knew the implications of the word of his impact going too fast and too soon.

Should we boldly tell the story of Jesus or should we keep the Messianic Secret? Honestly, I think we need to do both. When we are with friends or family, our life is showing and telling the story of Jesus. Sometimes our direct words about Him only spark arguments. When we are volunteering in a secular setting or giving our best at work each day, we can be Jesus in action and not in words. Then, when the timing is right, we need to tell the stories of what He has done in our lives. It’s a balancing act. Follow through as you hear the still small voice whispering “be quiet” or “be bold.”

For Reflection

Has there been a time when have you boldly told of your faith, and it didn’t go well?

How is your life telling your story of faith?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I am so thankful to live on this side of the resurrection with your Holy Spirit as my guide. I want to be your representative here on Earth. With friends, family, and co-workers, let my life be the clearest example of my faith, and let the words of my faith flow when you guide me. AMEN.
