Many of you remember Elvis Presley as one of America’s iconic entertainers. He died in 1977 at the age of 42 years young. His life was short, but well-marked with many musical accomplishments. In 1962, Elvis was featured in an American musical movie about a boxer entitled: “Kid Galahad,” based upon a story by Francis Wallace with a screenplay by William Fay. A popular song entitled “Home is Where the Heart Is,” written by Sherman Edwards and Hal David, was featured in the film, and Elvis Presley was dubbed a musical crooner.

“Home is where the heart is, And my heart is anywhere you are; Anywhere, you are is home.”

Many of you know God used Moses as the one who led the children of Israel out of Pharaoh’s land. However, Moses was a Psalm writer, too, and he composed Psalm 90, as a type of “musical soundtrack of his life.”

Moses acknowledges God as our home, dwelling place, and habitation.

“Lord, You, have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (vs.1-2)

Moses remembers.

Moses looks at death.

God invites humanity to repentance:

“You turn man to destruction,
And say, ‘Return, O children of men.’” (v.3)

Moses knows that the human heart strays and wanders from God:

“You have set our iniquities before You,
Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance.” (v.8)

Moses knows our lives are short-lived. He emphasizes the marking of our time on earth:

“For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years….” (vs.9-10)

How will your life be marked? Moses challenges us to live a life well-marked with contentment in God alone:

“Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!” (v.14)

Friends, God lives in us, and we live, move, and have our being in Jesus Christ. We are God’s workmanship. God is our home, habitation, and dwelling place.

God is working on our souls, and we should be at home with God working on us.

Moses decrees for us in the Psalm:
“Let Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.” (vs.16-17)

When we die, what will others say were our accomplishments? What will be the musical soundtrack underscoring our lives? Will that soundtrack contain the fruit of the spirit? Will that musical playlist echo melodies from heaven? Will the screen play of our souls resonate with God’s Word and Spirit? Will others see Christ’s work and the fruit of it in our lives? Will our lives appear to mark the beauty of the Lord upon us?

If we choose to accept God as our dwelling place, we become a lighthouse for the Holy Spirit, glorifying our Heavenly Father. Our ultimate destination is Christ Jesus who is in heaven sitting at the right hand of God the Father. With our Triune God, we have a home in glory.

While Elvis Presley sang “home is where the heart is,” Moses challenges us to sing, “Our hearts are at home—dwelling with our Everlasting God.”

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, compared to eternity, our lives are short. Yet You use this brevity of life, in your eternal plan, to articulate the vastness of your Kingdom, to make all things new. Give us a vision for dwelling in you and your will in everything we do. Lord, we praise you for being our dwelling place. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
