Devotional: June 10, 2026

So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.

2 Samuel 9:11

During 2026, Peachtree Church is inviting everyone into Cultivate, a churchwide discipleship plan centered on the fruit of the Spirit and the kind of life God longs to grow in us. Throughout the year, we’ll explore how love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control take shape in everyday life through the Spirit’s work. Cultivate brings together worship, Scripture, group guides, and meaningful practices designed to meet you where you are and support growth in ways that fit your season. These twice-weekly devotionals are one way to stay connected, offering reflection and grounding for daily life with God. Whether you engage in many ways or just one, you’re invited to be part of this shared journey of becoming more rooted in who God has created and called you to be.

Devotional

Most of us can remember a time when we felt like we did not belong. Maybe it was the lunch table at school. Maybe it was a new job, a social gathering, or a season when everyone else seemed connected while you felt invisible. There is something deeply human about wanting to know that we are welcomed and wanted.

That longing for belonging is one reason the story of Mephibosheth is so powerful. Mephibosheth expected judgment when he was summoned to King David. As the grandson of Saul, David’s former enemy, he had every reason to fear the worst. Instead, David welcomed him with remarkable kindness.

The climax of the story isn’t the restoration of land or possessions. It is David’s invitation: “You will always eat at my table.”

In the ancient world, sharing a table represented fellowship, acceptance, and relationship. David was not simply helping Mephibosheth survive. He was giving him a place to belong. The gospel tells a similar story.

Because of our sin, we were separated from God. We could not earn our way back into his family. Yet through Jesus Christ, God invites us to his table. We are not merely tolerated. We are welcomed. We are not treated as outsiders. We are adopted as sons and daughters.

Ephesians 2 reminds us that those who were once far away have been brought near through Christ. What was true for Mephibosheth is even more true for believers today. God has made room for us. The kindness of God doesn’t simply meet our needs. It gives us a new identity. We belong to him.

When we understand that truth, it changes how we treat others. People who know they have been welcomed by grace become people who extend grace. People who have been given a seat at God’s table become people who make room at their own tables. The kindness of Christ always creates space for others.
