Honour Academy

August Belong Series from Honour Academy

August 3, 10, and 17
9:45am
Fellowship Hall

How did the Church begin, and where is it headed today? What does it mean to be part of a local church in America—and how do we relate to Christians worshipping in underground gatherings across the world?

This 3-week Sunday morning class explores the Church from three angles: its historical roots, its American expressions, and its global realities—especially where believers endure persecution for their faith. In our final session, we’ll hear from Rev. Dr. Sasan Tavassoli, a former Shi’ite Muslim from Iran who came to faith in Christ through American missionaries. Now a Presbyterian pastor and missionary with the Outreach Foundation, he brings decades of experience serving the Iranian and Persian-speaking Church and will offer a powerful firsthand look at the global Body of Christ.

Whether you’re new to the faith or a longtime member, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the Church as a living, global Body shaped by Scripture, history, culture, and the Spirit of God. Join us for an honest, hopeful look at how Christ’s Church has taken shape through the centuries—and what it means for us today.

Registration is not required.

What is Honour Academy?

Named for C.S. and Ida Honour — our church’s founders and champions of Christian education — Honour Academy features expert-led courses for people who want to grow in faith, connect more deeply with others, and become more like Jesus.

We Invite You To…

See more of God’s work in your everyday life and relationships. Better express what you believe for yourself and those who want to know. Develop closer Christ-centered relationships in tight. Focused gatherings, and get equipped to become a more effective mentor, creator, leader, partner, parent, and friend.

What is Honour Academy Like?

We choose an area of study we think will make us better able to live the kind of life Jesus wants for us. We get together with people who feel the same way we do. Courses will include table-based discussions and focus on practical application.

Why is Honour Academy Important?

Those of us who want to grow in our faith don’t always know what steps to take. And though we attend church on Sunday, it can feel like a meaningful and compelling Christian life is just beyond our grasp.

That’s why we created Honour Academy. It features targeted topic-based courses designed for groups of people who want to grow in faith, connect more deeply with others, and become more like Jesus. We offer expert-led classes on how to understand the Bible, strengthen your relationship with God, practice your faith in daily life, and better engage with the world.

September 14, 21, and 28 | 6–7pm

The Kingdom Of God Is Like . . . Richmond AFC: Exploring The Gospel Through Ted Lasso

Dr. Joe Skillen

September 14, 21, and 28
6–7 pm

Jesus referenced the “Kingdom of God” more than 80 times in the Gospels—yet he never offered a single, tidy definition. Instead, he used evocative stories, similes, and parables to awaken the imagination and invite his listeners into a deeper mystery. In our own time, we still wrestle with how to describe and live into that Kingdom. How do we talk about something we sense is real, beautiful, and transformative—yet resists simple definition?

In this class, we’ll explore the bold and grace-filled vision of the Kingdom that Jesus proclaimed, using the hit Apple TV series Ted Lasso as our contemporary lens. With its themes of hope, humility, transformation, and unexpected grace, Ted Lasso—and the fictional football club Richmond AFC—offer a surprisingly rich narrative through which to better understand what it means to live as citizens of God’s Kingdom today.

God’s Covenant Of Redemption: From Abraham, Moses, And David To Jesus

Janie Jeter

September 14, 21, and 28
6–7 pm

Throughout history, God’s relationship with his people has been through covenant. Each week we will study in depth one of the expressions of God’s covenant relationship with his people that we find in our Old Testament. We will learn what covenant is, and we will discover how earlier expressions of God’s covenant enrich our understanding and experience of his new covenant in Jesus. What we learn about God, about his desires for his people, and about his faithfulness will give us deeper appreciation for the gift that is ours in Jesus as God’s new covenant people.

From The Inside Out

Rebecca Madden, Jennifer Batka & Elizabeth Payne

September 14, 21, and 28

Spiritual formation isn’t about trying harder—it’s about being transformed from the inside out.

This course invites you into the lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus in heart, mind, and everyday life. Together, we’ll explore how deep change begins at the core of who we are—and how our view of God, the gospel, and ourselves shapes the way we live, love, and grow. Along the way, we’ll discover that true freedom and wholeness come not through striving, but through grace.

Led by Jennifer Batka, Elizabeth Payne, and Rebecca Madden, the course draws from Renovaré’s From the Inside Out curriculum and the teaching team’s experience in

Renovaré’s Churches in Renewal cohort. With warmth, wisdom, and practical insight,

they’ll guide us through spiritual practices and meaningful conversations that open us to a richer, more transformative life with God.

Katie and Steve Gohde

Katie Gohde is a licensed professional counselor with a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University in Chicago. Before she and Steve relocated to Georgia in 2007, she worked exclusively with children and their families. She continued this work until their first son was born in 2011. Since then, she has been passionate about equipping couples to thrive in their marriages and lead loving families. In addition to her private practice, she enjoys a wide range of speaking and teaching engagements. She leads workshops for professional organizations, churches, schools, and special interest groups covering topics like healthy relationships, strong marriages, parenthood, communication and conflict, team building and boundaries. Her very favorite workshops are the ones she gets to lead with her husband, Steve.

Steve likes to say their house is the beta test for the theories or ideas Katie uses in her practice. He spent 15 years in corporate America with companies ranging in size from Fortune 100 to small startups. A decade ago, he decided to started his own firm. As a side hustle, he has loved leading workshops with Katie. In his experience, if concepts in a book can’t survive the rhythm of real-life demands, they shouldn’t be put into practice. As a result, only the tools that have worked in their own house have made it into their workshops. Having led many teams throughout his career, he loves seeing people reach their full potential—the same desire he has for marriages when he teaches alongside Katie.

Katie and Steve have been married for 21 years, live in Atlanta and have 2 children, Robbie and Maddie. They also have 2 dogs, 2 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, 2 fish and 2 of any other animal Katie and Maddie can talk Steve into acquiring.
