During 2025, Peachtree Church is focusing on the Book of Psalms with a series called Dwell, through which we seek to deepen our conversation with God and open ourselves to hearing his response. The practice of praying three times each day will unite the voices of our hearts and souls as we seek the day when we will see the full realization of the Kingdom of God, promised in Revelation 21:3: “…Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”
We will email devotionals twice weekly with Monday’s providing an overview of the Psalm as a whole, and Wednesday’s focused on that week’s Daily Dwell.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
His love endures forever.
and brought Israel out from among them
His love endures forever.
with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
His love endures forever.to him who divided the Red Sea asunder
His love endures forever.
and brought Israel through the midst of it,
His love endures forever.
but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
His love endures forever.to him who led his people through the wilderness;
His love endures forever.to him who struck down great kings,
His love endures forever.
and killed mighty kings—
His love endures forever.
Sihon king of the Amorites
His love endures forever.
and Og king of Bashan—
His love endures forever.
and gave their land as an inheritance,
His love endures forever.
an inheritance to his servant Israel.
His love endures forever.He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
He gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.Give thanks to the God of heaven.
Psalm 136
His love endures forever.
Devotional
Did you know that Psalm 136 invites us to repeat the phrase “His love endures forever” twenty-six times? That kind of repetition is worth noticing. It’s there to help us remember something central to our faith: that God’s steadfast love is constant and sure. Through each line, God is shaping our hearts to remember what our minds so easily forget. The repetition is forming us. It helps the truth of God’s enduring love move from something we know in our heads to something we rest in with our hearts.
In the Reformed tradition, we understand this steadfast love, or hesed, as covenant love. It’s not dependent on emotion or circumstance, and it doesn’t waver with time. It is anchored in God’s unchanging character. God’s love endures because God Himself endures. The psalmist walks us through Scripture’s story to show that every act of God flows from His faithfulness to His people.
When we repeat, “His love endures forever,” we join generations who have spoken these same words in faith. God’s people have echoed this refrain in every age. When life was full of joy and when it was marked by struggle, they have proclaimed God’s love. And we see this enduring love most clearly in Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of God’s covenant and the living proof that His love truly does endure forever.
So as we read this psalm, let’s not rush. Let’s rest in it. Let the words do their work. With every repetition, may our hearts grow more certain that the same God who was faithful to His people throughout Scripture remains faithful to us and will be faithful to the generations yet to come.
For Reflection
- When you hear the words, “His love endures forever,” in what part of your life do you most need to remember that right now?
- How have you seen God’s steadfast love remain constant through seasons of change or uncertainty?
- In what ways might you intentionally pause during Scripture reading or prayer to let God’s truth move from your head to your heart?
Prayer
Faithful God,
Your love truly does endure forever.
Thank You for the ways You have shown that love through history.
Help us to slow down and let Your Word sink deeply into our hearts.
When we are tempted to forget, remind us again that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
