During 2025, Peachtree Church is focusing on the Book of Psalms with a series called Dwell, through which we seek to deepen our conversation with God and open ourselves to hearing his response. The practice of praying three times each day will unite the voices of our hearts and souls as we seek the day when we will see the full realization of the Kingdom of God, promised in Revelation 21:3: “…Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”
We will email devotionals twice weekly with Monday’s providing an overview of the Psalm as a whole, and Wednesday’s focused on that week’s Daily Dwell.
“You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty….”
Psalm 91:1
Devotional
We all search for home, and when we find it, we experience peace. Ginger and I are moving our family to Atlanta this summer, and, at the time of this writing, have found our new place. God is good!
Picking out a home from afar is an interesting process. Many of you know how quickly homes go on and off the market in Atlanta. If you find one you like while browsing online, you have to do your best to imagine where your furniture might go, what room your kids would like, etc.
Our realtor has been so helpful in our search for our new home. She’s been able to take our list of preferences, visit homes for us, and imagine whether the house would be suitable for our next home. She’s been so kind to us; I hope our house search hasn’t been too difficult.
Although Psalm 91:1 serves as a thesis statement to a list of truths for the rest of the Psalm, I also see it as an invitation. It’s an appeal to those who haven’t found their way to God’s feathered nest to consider finding their way into God’s care.
When I think of all of the ways we could call a person to Christ (traditionally known as evangelism) I think this invitation-shaped one might be the most honest, benevolent, and considerate way to do it. Much like our realtor who stood in our new home and said, “I think you’ll love it here,” we call out from God’s feathered nest to family, friends, coworkers, and strangers and say, “I think you’ll love it here, in God’s infinite care.”
Someone invited us to Christ in this way. I know that God would use our lives to invite someone else.
My encouragement today is to start with prayer. Ask God, “Who in my life is ready to hear the invitation to follow the way of Jesus?”
For Reflection
- Who was the person who invited you to follow Jesus? How did they do it? What was most inviting about their approach?
- Without thinking too long and hard about it, who in your life are you most eager to come to know God? Is God encouraging you to share with them?
Prayer
Most High Father, You invite us to dwell in Your shelter—a refuge not of walls, but of love, not of escape, but of belonging. Teach us to rest in the shadow of Your mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, You walked through danger to draw near to us. You are the shelter in every storm, the shadow that shields, the way that calls us home. Help us follow You with courage and trust. Holy Spirit, come close and stir our hearts. Draw us beneath Your wings, guide our feet to the path of life, and give us boldness to invite others into this abiding love. We choose to abide. We choose to follow. We choose to trust. Amen.
